Why vote?

Your vote
Every Canadian citizen has the right to vote.It is how Canadians choose which leaders represent them and voting is a responsibility that all Canadians should exercise.
Your community is shaped by the outcome of an election— voting is one of the most important ways you can advocate for yourself and your community.
Voting connects citizens with the political process. When you take part in an election and express your view, you make democracy work.
During an election, eligible Calgarians will vote to elect their mayor, councillors, public and separate school board trustees.
The candidates who are elected for mayor and councillor positions will form your council. They are responsible for deciding major issues that impact Calgarians day-to-day lives.
Voting for these positions gives you a say in the direction The City will take on services such as:
- public transit,
- waste collection,
- recreation programs,
- police, and
- fire services.
School board trustees are elected to make decisions and provide a local perspective on budgets, policies and facilities in your school system.
Voting is everyone’s responsibility. You have the opportunity to determine who leads your city, your province and your country.
